May 21, 2014. They were the power couple of sport (certainly until Tiger Woods found Lindsay Vonn) who became engaged on New Year’s Day after two years together. Today within five months of that announcement, it’s all over. And how. They were all set to get married, the wedding invites were out and bells could almost be heard.

McIlroy issued a statement this morning confirming the news, just after his wedding invitations were sent at the weekend. He wished Caroline the best for the future and said he will not be elaborating on their split in the future.

“There is no right way to end a relationship that has been so important to two people,” McIlroy said today, after a discussion with Wozniacki.

The Mirror in the UK reports that Rory ‘dumped her’ apparently realising he was not ‘ready for marriage.’

His full statement read as follows:

“There is no right way to end a relationship that has been so important to two people.

“The problem is mine. The wedding invitations issued at the weekend made me realise that I wasn’t ready for all that marriage entails.

“I wish Caroline all the happiness she deserves and thank her for the great times we’ve had.

“I will not be saying anything more about our relationship in any setting.”
