May 29, 2015: Rory McIlroy’s woes continued unabated after he made a miserable nine over 80 in the first round of the Irish Open. The world No.1 had pledged his winnings from this week to charity, but he faces a near impossible battle for survival on Friday just to remain relevant for the weekend.

Playing at the tournament that is hosted by him for the Rory McIlroy Foundation, the 26 year old failed to find his range through a long and dreadful day in his home tournament.

Playing from the 10th, in front of his home fans, he shot five bogeys in the first nine holes and surrendered another four shots over the second nine.

The young golfer struggled all day, unable to find distance and direction off his driver. With his putter not on song either, he was left counting his bruises as he went from one bogey to the next.

“I was caught between trying to play two ways. My poor iron play led to missed greens and I left myself a lot of eight to 12 foot putts for par, pretty much all of which I missed,” said McIlroy after his round.

McIlroy had also missed the cut at the BMW PGA Championship last week.
