WWATC Japan:Indians tied 4th

September 4, 2014:  Indian Team of Aditi Ashok, Gurbani Singh and Astha Madan made an impressive start after being tied fourth in the first round of Women’s World Amateur Team Championship (WWATC) at Karuizawa 72 Golf East.

 

Aditi Ashok posted a fine 3 under 69 to get a back up from Gurbani with a par round. Astha Madan’s 3 over 75 was a disappointment but only best two scores were counted for day’s positioning on the leaderboard.

 

Meanwhile, Canada posted a record score of 9-under 135 to take a two-stroke lead after the first round of the 2014 Women’s World Amateur Team Championship. A 6-under-par 66 from 2014 U.S. Women’s Amateur runner-up Brooke Mackenzie Henderson and a 69 from Augusta James, gave a perfect start for Canadian team.

 

However, Canada’s total 135 is the lowest first-round score in WWATC history, bettering the previous mark of 136 by the USA in 2010. The Republic of Korea, the two-time defending champion, follows at 137, while the French team with 140 in third. India shares the fourth sport with the Republic of Ireland and Italy for tied fourth at 3-under 141. Six strokes behind the tournament leaders.

 

The Women’s World Amateur Team Championship began on Wednesday, bringing the top amateur golfers in the world to 72 Golf East in Japan.

 

Teams from 51 different countries are playing four rounds in the play-three-count-two format. The team with the lowest 72-hole total will win. South Korea has won two consecutive tournaments (2012, 2010), while the United States has not come out on top since 1998.
