May 19,2014: Miguel Ángel Jiménez put all his experiences of home turf to overthrow all his challengers to lift Spanish Open title on Sunday. Jiménez became the first player over the age of 50 to win a European Tour event after beating Thomas Pieters and Richard Green in a three-way play-off at the Spanish Open in Girona.

The Spaniard, who claimed his 21st win on the European Tour, shot a two-over-par 73 in the final round for a total of 284, forcing a play-off against 22-year-old Belgian Pieters (75) and Australian Green (72).

The 50-year-old Jiménez held his nerve as the trio went back down the 18th hole and with Pieters and Green spraying their tee shots, Jiménez, the world No 34, tapped in for par to seal his first Spanish Open victory in 27 attempts.

“I’ve played so many times in the Spanish Open, it’s great to finally win it. It’s amazing to win the national Open of my country,” home favourite Jiménez told Sky Sports.

Known for his love of Rioja and cigars, Jiménez won his home open at the 27th attempt. With this victory, he also surges high in Ryder Cup contention

“Every title is special, and you don’t like to say one is better than the other, but to win the Spanish Open is very, very important to me.”

Only Indian playing the weekend, Gaganjeet Bhullar finished 75th at the Spanish Open after concluding with a total of 306 in four rounds.
