April 22, 2015: Shiv Kapur and SSP Chawrasia are the Indian attractions this week at the Volvo China Open. The event was inaugurated yesterday with great fanfare and festivities at the Tomson Shanghai Pudong Golf Club. The event offers a purse of €3 million, with the winner taking €500,000. Alex Levy is the defending champion at the 21st edition of China’s national Open.
The layout at the club measures 7,296 yards with par set at 72. Kapur finished T46 and T52 at his last two events – the Trophee Hassan II and Shenzhen International respectively.
In the third round at Morocco and in the first round last week Kapur showed signs of some great form as he made impressive scores of 67 and 69.
If he can sustain the form and improve upon his consistency, he could be setting himself up for some high finishes in the weeks to come.
The highlights of Chawrasia’s season came at the Maybank Malaysian Open, where he finished 10th and a second place finish at the Hero Indian Open, where he lost on the first playoff hole to Anirban Lahiri.
After missing the cut at the Joburg Open, Chawrasia could not test himself in Portugal where the weather forced a cancellation of the Madeira Islands Open.
Chawrasia is currently ranked 172 in the world and is placed 41st in the Race to Dubai. The top sixty players make the year end event. Kapur is ranked 278th in the world and is 97th in the Race to Dubai.
“It’s nice to go back to a tournament as defending champion, especially when it’s your first title. I just want to enjoy the week. I’m playing well and my game is in good shape, so hopefully it should be fun,” said an expectant Levy. “I wasn’t playing very well at the start of the season, so I just decided to go back to what I was doing before – playing more aggressively, and not thinking about things too much. It seems to be working!”
