May 26, 2014. It was a sweet win for fifty year old Scot, Colin Montgomerie who defeated 64 year old Tom Watson and Bernhard Langer to bag his first victory on American soil on the Senior PGA Tour.

Gushing over his victory, Montgomerie said to Golf.com ,” “I feel fantastic, really, superb. There’s a motto: `If you fail and fail, you come back and try again.’ I’ve had a couple of failures here in America and close calls, especially in major championships, and it’s great to finally win, never mind a Champions Tour event, but a Senior PGA Championship event.”

Having been runner up for five times, in Majors, Montgomerie surprised his critics with this win. He had to finish 13 under par before he could draw the line to finish the game. When he spoke to BBC , he said, “”It’s been a long time. It’s a very special moment.” He has been trying for a long time now and this victory was long due.

Montgomerie could claim the senior Major only in his fifth try. Among a list of Scots, he is the third to win the Senior Golf’s PGA Championship. Since Jock Hutchison’s second win in 1940, he is the first. In the last 71 Majors during his regular days, he could not make it even once. Some of his best shots involved birdies at 12,14 and 15. He shot a 6 under 65 leading to a four stroke victory over Tom Watson. The birdies in the middle of the round served as the essential key. Watson on the other hand, aimed for the title of being the oldest player to win the event but missed several chances of birding.

One of the crucial moments in the game arrived when Montgomerie covered the 20 yards and the ball made a roll to the middle of the green and set up in a tap-par. His victory earned him a check of $378.000 and a name on the Alfred S. Bourne Trophy.
