Sept 10, 2013. Mithun Parera would like to live up to his father’s expectations, who once told him, to keep his focus right and get as many birdies as he can. He is son of veteran Srilankan golfer Nandasena who won silver in Asian Games in 1990. Mithun is the first Srilankan to earn a full Asian Tour Card in 2013.

“My father Nandasena is a legend and he is my coach too. The Sri Lankan people cheer for me and give me a lot of well wishes,” Mithun has said in an earlier interview to Asian Tour.

26-year-old Colombo lad played football in his younger days and always held the striker’s position, but destiny had clearly got something else for him. As Mithun stepped into his dad’s shoes, golf came naturally to him.

Mithun turned pro in 2011 and has shown steady rise in the career graph. His sensational finish within top-61 in Order of Merit after winning 2012 TATA Open in India and Standard Chartered Open in Sri Lanka earned him a full Asian Tour card for 2013. Due to his country exemption category, the Sri Lankan played in only eight Asian Tour events but it was enough to secure his place among Asia’s leading stars.

Interestingly, unlike many youngsters of his age, the modern equipments do not fancy him and he likes to retain traditional equipment in his bag. He reveals that most of his equipment is over 12 year old and that keeps him in comfort zone.

Some day he would like to win The Masters Tournament. Like many others in Asia region, he too wants to play on the Augusta National Golf course.
