Rory in form, leads Memorial

After the grand success at the BMW PGA Championship, McIlRoy scored a nine under par,63 ,leading the opening round of Memorial Tournament in Ohio.

May 30, 2014. After the grand success at the BMW PGA Championship, McIlRoy scored a nine under par,63 ,leading the opening round of Memorial Tournament in Ohio. After a break up with his long time girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki and a knee problem, it is commendable to see Rory perform this well.

With a gripping performance in the back nine, he defeated Adam Scott, the current no.1 in terms of World ranking , by six. Scott could only putt 21 in 18 holes. At the 14th hole, Rory got a double bogey due to a careless shot but nevertheless , he posted four threes consecutively to get a minus eight with a memorable 59.

 

Two birdies on the 16 helped him to get the nine under and the par save from the 10ft ensured his final win. “I played really well from tee to green and holed lot of putts,” I could have been even better apart from that double bogey. But I am really happy, it was a really good opening round,’’ Mc IlRoy told The Guardian.

 

 

Some of the other players had made a promising start. Paul Casey carded a 66 while Luke Donald closed with a 71. “That was a joy,” beamed Casey and went onto confess, “I thought the golf course was in impeccable shape, beautifully set up. I’m very happy with six under. I would have snapped your hand off if you had offered me that this morning.” Phil Mickelson on the other hand has to put in more efforts to make the cut halfway.

 

 

The Memorial Tournament is holding its 40th edition and has earned the reputation of being the biggest non-major events in the PGA Tour. This year, the tournament is seeing the very best of the top 30 in the FedEx list play . With the US Open coming up, it would be interesting to see who tees off with the prize at the end of this tournament.
