Machrihanish - A visit to a special course

Bob Thukral, golfingindian

Meet Bob Thukral…whose first love is golf. He travels every year with a bunch of friends to play golf. A couple of year ago it was Hilton Head, year before last Bob was following all the action at the Ryder Cup in Medinah Country Club Chicago – the one where Rory nearly missed his tee time and of course Bob’s been to The Masters. He knows his golf and he knows his wine. Starting today Bob will blog on golfingindian.com – follow him and his friends in their journey across Scotland’s best golf courses…for we are sure all of these courses are on your bucket list.

Playing At Machrihanish Dunes

Today we played at the Machrihanish Dunes course. European only fully certified organic course, no chemicals are used to tend the fairways or the greens. This links style course abuts the Atlantic Ocean with grand views of the islands of Jura and islay ( famous for their whiskies like lagavulin and caol isla) and in the far horizons even glimpses of Northern Ireland. The weather gods again cooperated and I had the privilege of working with one of the finest caddies in Scotland, a Welshman by the bane if Owen Morgan. He kept me entertained but most importantly kept me hitting straight! At the end of my round he presented me with a small bottle of spring bank malt and an invitation to join the macirhsnish golf club! The people here have been delightful, gracious and friendly. This was a tough course to walk given the undulations. After 27 holes we were exhausted. After a hot shower and a delicious meal at the black sheep pub we visited the coolest scotch bar at the ardshiel hotel. The night ended with a sip of the 45 year old spring bank whiskey. Last round tomorrow awaits us at the Machrihanish golf club! At the end of this golf pilgrimage we would have played 12 rounds of golf in 10 days and walked over a 100 miles…
