May 15, 2014: India’s SSP Chowrasia opened with a one -under -71, to begin as  best placed Indian at the ICTSI Philippine Open, which began at Wack Wack Golf and Country Club on Thursday. Meanwhile, Kim Chan of USA and Siddikur Rahman of Bangladesh made a  perfect take off in the tournament with a six-under-66 to share clubhouse lead at Asia’s oldest national open in Manila.

Chowrasia  made six birdies, but a double bogey on 4th and two other bogeys spoiled his chances to scale up the leader board. He lies at 10th position after first round. Manav Jaini was second best Indian with a card of one over 73 on day one of Philippine Open.

Asian Tour’s Order of Merit leader, Anirban Lahiri  made a disappointing opening at theUS$300,000 event, as he carded three-over-75 at Wack Wack Golf and Country Club on first day.

Lahiri’s first round began with a bogey and ended with a bogey. A double bogey on eighth and another bogey on 13th made the task difficult for him on day one at Philippines. He made two birdies on 4th and 5th hole.

Currently ranked 64th on the Official World Golf Ranking, Lahiri will be aiming for a victory at the venerable Wack Wack Golf and Country Club to give himself a chance to break into the top-60 in the world by May 26th to qualify for the U.S. Open in June.

He is enjoying a hot streak after contributing two points in Team Asia’s draw with Team Europe in the inaugural EurAsia Cup in Malaysia in March, and continued his form by winning the CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters last month when he eagled the last hole. He recently closed at a 6th place in Laguna National Championship.

Angad Cheema too made a dismal start after opening with a round of 75 at Philippine Open.
